ChasingCars - AUDI RS Q88

The RS Q8 I drove didn’t have ceramic brakes fitted – just the ‘stock’ 420mm front discs with 10-piston calipers and 370mm rears with six-pistons – yet those who did try the optional set-up said that pedal travel was quite long. In the stock RS Q8, not only do you need to depress the brake pedal more than you should, there’s also unexpectedly wooden feel. On the dynamic upside, the RS Q8 keeps both body roll and body control neatly in check, and it’s nicely balanced, sending more drive to the rear than the front. More agreeable, though, is its ride quality, which is bloody impressive given the size of those hoops filling its enormous guards. And for most people, this is what matters.

In combination with the pronounced rear torque bias, quattro sport diff and rear-wheel steering, the RS Q8 remains flat and composed almost irrespective of radius, surface and speed. When kicked in the butt, exiting a bend is often accompanied by a faint trace of oversteer, but proper slides only happen on gravel or when ESC is fully deactivated. More than anything, this car loves quick esses and multi-lane roundabouts.

There’s also Audi’s 48V coasting function – or in Audi-speak ‘mild-hybrid system’ – that can, depending on driving conditions and drive mode selected, shut down the engine completely at speeds between 55km/h and 160km/h for up to 40 seconds, again saving on fuel. Audi reckons it’s good for a fuel saving of as much as 0.8L/100km during everyday driving. The RS Q8 comes fitted with all the latest safety tech wizardry: adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, exit warning that alerts the driver to the presence of cars or cyclist upon opening the door, rear cross-traffic alert, Audi pre-sense front and rear (aka autonomous emergency braking), a 360-degree camera, traffic sign recognition, and high-beam assist. Eight airbags offer protection for all occupants.
