Honda's Accord is a modern sedan without shouty styling, that hides some brilliant technology you would never expect. It is certainly one for people who value long distance comfort more than sporty handling, but we love the zippy V6 engine. Overall, it’s a blend of innovation and comfort, with a hint of Honda’s fanatical precision and attention to detail. The best part has to be that starting price. No other car in this segment is able to better or even match this for sheer packaging and luxury.?

There are also typical driver-assist systems that work with the driver, rather than against. While the Accord doesn’t have a fully fledged lane-centring system, the lane-keep assist is almost good enough to fill that gap. The safety and assist roll call includes six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, rear cross-traffic alert, driver-attention monitoring, auto high beam, a surround-view camera, rear cross-traffic alert, smart parking assist, a rear-view camera with dynamic guidelines, and front and rear park sensors. At the time of publishing, ANCAP had not yet put the Accord through a local crash-test assessment.

Up front, the electronically adjustable seats offer plenty of variability to get into the perfect position, and the driver’s seat also has a memory setting if you are sharing the Accord with different people. The door bins are a little on the smaller size and struggle to fit a full-sized water bottle, but the centre console boasts a deep cavity, with two cupholders also featured next to the shifter. The wireless smartphone charger position , which is between the shifter and climate controls, does eat up an entire storage hole because once you put your phone down, you don’t want to put your keys or wallet on top of it and risk scratching your screen.

The Hybrid essentially carries over its relatively new drivetrain from the previous model, which is no bad thing. It’s a silky-smooth 2.0-litre naturally aspirated ‘Atkinson-cycle’ four with a pair of electric motors, giving total system outputs of 158kW and 315Nm (from 0-2000rpm), and is the pick of the two. It also drinks just 4.3L/100km of 91-octane on the combined fuel cycle (compared to 6.5 for the turbo-petrol).
