We understand electric systems, such as battery technology and electric motors, cost a lot of money to produce and develop. Especially batteries at this stage of the industry’s EV progress. However, $20,000 seems like a lot more to pay over an almost identical petrol model. Especially when, on paper, the powertrain performance is only marginally improved while offering a small electric range figure. However, we do admire the 508 GT Fastback’s design and the PHEV’s innovation and speed at which it has been able to reach Australian shores. If you already adore the 508 GT then yes, this is worth a look. Especially if you live in a built-up area and mostly travel short distances, because you’ll benefit most from the electric driving capability.

The transition from engine to motor is incredibly smooth, but with the electric range running out so quickly all I often heard was the petrol engine struggling to tow a heavy car full of batteries and a motor around. As for downsides? Visibility is compromised by thick, short A-pillars and a narrow windscreen and rear window, while the steering wheel’s odd shape and tiny size feels strange to use, but you will get used to it.

We like the exterior styling and the comprehensible interior layout, and of course the fuel economy of the diesel. The problem for us is the price. In flagship GT wagon form, you’re looking at around $60k before on-road costs. This price point is snapping at the heels of some of the higher grade German rivals. If you want something a little different with a touch of French suaveness though, with brilliant cruising comfort and economy, then this is definitely one you should be checking out.

Finally, there’s the rear-seat practicality. The sloping roofline and limited headroom means it’s very compromised compared to a more convention sedan. If you have growing kids or taller adults you plan to cart around regularly, this isn’t the best car for the job. What my time with the 508 GT Fastback PHEV showed me is just what good value the standard 508 GT Fastback is, even if initially we thought it was quite expensive compared to something like a Camry or Passat.
